What is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, involves directly inserting specially prepared sperm into a woman’s womb at the most fertile point in her menstrual cycle. Doctors use hormone blood tests and monitoring scans to keep track of the cycle and pinpoint the time at which ovulation is likely to occur. They then introduce the sperm into the uterus in a simple, non-invasive theatre procedure.

The IUI treatment can occur during the natural cycle or, if required, a woman’s ovulation can be stimulated to induce the release of eggs.

There is no egg collection involved in artificial insemination, and the procedure is usually easy and pain-free.

Who is it for?

IUI can be a helpful option for various couples and individuals seeking parenthood, addressing a range of fertility needs, including:

  • For patients struggling to conceive with no clear cause (unexplained infertility), IUI can be a first-line treatment, boosting sperm's chance to meet the egg.
  • IUI is the go-to method for artificial insemination with donor sperm, making it a viable option for same-sex female couples and single women.

Functioning and open fallopian tubes and a good ovarian reserve are important for a successful IUI.

Compared to procedures like IVF, IUI fertility treatment offers a simpler, less invasive and potentially more affordable approach. If you've been trying to conceive for a while but have no obvious fertility issues, IUI could be a good first option for you.

What are the benefits of IUI?

IUI offers many benefits for couples and individuals looking to start a family. Here's why it might be the right choice for you:

  • Safe

IUI usually needs fewer or no fertility medications, minimising potential side effects. This gentler approach can be particularly appealing to those who want a less invasive, more natural, path to conception.
  • Good for single women & same-sex couples

IUI using donor sperm is a fantastic option for single women and same-sex couples who want to start or build a family. Donor sperm is carefully selected by regulated sperm banks for its high quality, making it particularly well-suited for IUI and increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.
  • Affordable

IUI is one of the most affordable options when it comes to assisted reproduction. Compared to other fertility treatments, it's significantly cheaper, easing the financial burden on your parenthood journey.
  • Easier & less invasive

The IUI procedure itself is quick, usually not painful, and doesn't require anaesthesia or sedation. This means minimal discomfort and a faster recovery time compared to other fertility treatments, with less disruption to life and work commitments.

  • Ultrasound scan and initial consultation

Your first step is to come to CREATE Fertility for an initial consultation and an advanced ultrasound scan. This will allow us to assess your egg reserve, egg quality, uterine and ovarian health, and check for any polyps, fibroids, or other factors that might impact outcome. This information will help us determine if IUI is the right option for you. During your initial consultation, we may discuss both IUI and IVF, depending on your individual case, so you can make an informed decision about your treatment.

  • Semen analysis

To determine the suitability for IUI, we need to assess sperm quality – if you are proceeding with your partner’s sperm. If you have a semen analysis from within the past six months, we can use those results. Otherwise, we’ll arrange a semen analysis for you. This involves producing a fresh sperm sample at our clinic for analysis.

  • Treatment consultation

Around two weeks before your next period, you'll come in for a consultation with one of our dedicated CREATE Fertility nurses. This session provides an opportunity to discuss your personalised IUI treatment plan in detail. The nurse will walk you through the entire process and answer any questions you might have. Additionally, they'll guide you through the necessary consent forms, ensuring you're comfortable and informed every step of the way.

  • Scans and blood tests

Our team closely monitors your ovulation cycle using advanced monitoring scans. We might also recommend specific blood tests to assess hormone levels and pinpoint the ideal window for insemination. This personalised approach ensures the best timing for successful IUI.

  • Sperm preparation

Whether you're using your partner's sperm or donor sperm from our CREATE Fertility sperm bank, the sample undergoes a meticulous preparation process in our state-of-the-art lab. This is intended to separate the most active and healthy sperms from less motile or abnormal sperms, maximising the number of high-quality sperms used for insemination.

  • Insemination

Our experienced clinicians perform the IUI procedure in a comfortable and private setting. During a routine gynaecological exam, a thin, flexible catheter is gently inserted through your cervix and into your uterus. The prepared sperm sample is then precisely injected directly into your uterus, giving the sperm a head-start on reaching the egg.

  • Pregnancy test

Following your IUI procedure, the wait for pregnancy news begins. Approximately 10-14 days after insemination, we'll invite you back to the CREATE clinic for a blood pregnancy test to check for a positive result. You may also choose to have a urine pregnancy test at home.

What are the success rates of IUI?

The success rate of IUI varies depending on several factors. In general, younger women (under 35) have a higher chance of success compared to older women. Success rates for IUI are roughly around a third of that for IVF.

Many women will have several cycles of IUI before they have a successful pregnancy so it’s worth considering that when you’re thinking about costs of treatment.

Possible side effects of IUI

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a well-established fertility treatment with a high safety profile. We will talk you through potential outcomes and personalised success rates during your consultation.

One consideration is the possibility of a multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, or more babies). While uncommon with IUI alone, multiple pregnancies can carry increased risks for both mother and babies, including premature birth, low birth weight, and potential complications before or after delivery.

The chance of having multiples is linked to the number of eggs released during ovulation. Fertility medications used to stimulate ovulation can increase the number of mature eggs, thus raising the risk. We attempt to minimise this risk by avoiding inseminations in cycles where there are multiple ovarian follicles developing at the same time.

For more details on the possible side effects of IUI, visit the HFEA website.

IUI Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get pregnant with IUI?

The time it takes to get pregnant with IUI varies significantly depending on individual factors such as age, underlying fertility issues, and sperm quality. While some couples conceive on the first try, others may need multiple cycles. The average success rate per cycle: is around 10-15%.

Is IUI 100% successful?

No, IUI is not a guaranteed path to pregnancy. Several factors influence the outcome, including age, underlying issues, and sperm quality. IUI has a lower chance of success than IVF.

Is the IUI procedure painful?

Most women experience mild discomfort or cramping during IUI, similar to a smear test. It's not typically considered a painful procedure.

How successful is IUI on the first try?

The success rate on the first attempt with IUI is around 10-15%. This means there's a chance of pregnancy on the first try, but it's not uncommon to require multiple cycles for successful conception.

Is IUI better than IVF?

The right fertility treatment for you depends on several factors: your unique fertility situation, age, budget, and what feels most comfortable. After a consultation and scan, one of our fertility experts will walk you through both IUI and IVF, helping you choose the option which best suits your fertility and situation.

Why would a Heterosexual couple choose IUI over IVF?

IUI can be a good option for heterosexual couples dealing with infertility challenges. It's less invasive and often more affordable than IVF, making it an attractive choice. IUI is especially helpful for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical factor infertility. However, it’s worth noting that IUI typically has lower success rates compared to IVF. One of our fertility specialists can guide you in deciding which treatment is best for your situation.
