I had thought about egg freezing for a few years, partly because I am 32 and the reality is that my biological clock is ticking. I’ve also had medical problems in the past such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts and part of my cervix removed, so I always worried that I’d have more problems which might affect my fertility. Furthermore, I work for an international children’s charity and spend a lot of time living abroad or travelling from place to place, so my life isn’t yet settled enough for a child.

When my relationship ended early this year, I was spurred on to go ahead and make it happen. I started researching different fertility clinics which offer egg freezing and attended some open days, with a couple of friends who were also interested, to get as much information as I could.

Due to the fact that I work within the charity sector I don’t have a lot of money to spend; the money that I did have for the procedure, I’ve had to save up. So for me it was really important to get value for my money and this is one of the many reasons CREATE appealed to me. Their natural approach with the use of as little drugs as possible means that it is more affordable as well as kinder to my body. CREATE also seemed so much more adaptable to the individual in comparison to other clinics.

I decided to go ahead and book an initial consultation and scan after which I felt like I had enough information to make a final decision. I decided to go ahead. The most difficult part is trying to fit it around work and other commitments. All the appointments have to be scheduled around your menstrual cycle and so you are left feeling a bit out of control. CREATE did make the process of scheduling appointments as stress-free as possible; I was always able to get early morning appointments so that I could go in to work right after and keep control over who I had to tell about the procedure.

The two weeks leading up to the egg collection were quite tiring, both mentally and physically. You have to go in to it accepting that you are messing with your hormones for a few weeks and that it will become tedious having to plan your days around the medication. With that being said, the information CREATE provided made it as easy as it could be. After the fertility nurse explained the medication and how to inject it, they also provided me with an online video guide that I watched at home. The first time that I injected myself it was quite scary, especially if you’ve never done it before, therefore having the video with the step by step guide was really useful. The egg collection was fairly simple; I didn’t find it painful. I planned to work from home the day after just in case I was feeling tired, however I was fine right away. I had a quiet few days and weekend following the operation and was back to normal.

Looking back, I am so glad that I did it. Everyone I’ve told is also really supportive and think I’ve made a really smart decision. I feel like it’s also made dating in London a little easier because I no longer put myself under pressure to find the right partner and this has been received quite well too.

I would definitely advise anyone considering egg freezing not to go at it alone. Talking to someone is really good; having family members, friends or a colleague that knows is very helpful. Generally, I think the type of women who are considering egg freezing like being in control of their lives hence making the decision to do this, but the actual process is out of your control and you have to let your body do its thing during this process; you can’t choose when your cycle is going to be. It’s important to accept this. It will impact your schedule and you will have to be flexible for a few weeks, but if you go into it knowing that this is going to be the case, you will be fine.

I would definitely recommend CREATE if you are considering freezing your eggs. I’ve already recommended CREATE to my friends, but of course everyone has to do their own research and choose whichever clinic is right for them. I personally feel that CREATE has the right balance for me in terms of their natural approach and their affordability. For me, it was a really good experience; everyone at CREATE was really accommodating and friendly. The nurses did everything they could to make me comfortable and the doctors were very good every time. Although you might not always see the same doctor each time, which is completely understandable given that CREATE are open 7 days a week, you will get the appointment times you need.

When I talk to my mum and other female relatives about my decision, they tell me about how they wish this choice was available to them in their 30s. I am really happy to have done it and really hope that it becomes the norm for the next generation of women.
